Fishing for Heroes

Fishing for Heroes provide fully funded fishing courses as part of a package for veterans and active servicemen and women who are suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), combat fatigue and other emotional or psychological problem related to their involvement on active service.  It can take many years for PTSD to be diagnosed and for sufferers to receive the support they need.  The charity aims to support all of those affected by this cruel and often hidden condition.

Research has shown that fishing can be an effective therapy with studies indicating that a short course of instruction can lead to a reduction of up to 20% in PTSD symptoms.  As well as helping to improve mental wellbeing, it also fosters a sense of community.

A donation earlier this year supported local veterans to take part in the 4-day residential course at Ladybower Fisheries in Derbyshire.  As the saying goes “give a man a fish and you feed him today, teach him to fish and he can feed himself forever”.

Burton & District Mind

Affiliated to Mind, the leading mental health charity in England & Wales, Burton & District Mind aim to provide access to good quality mental health advice, guidance and meaningful support in the community.

Following a recent survey highlighting the need for more physical projects to support mental health, the Toyota Manufacturing UK Charitable Trust helped to fund 'Bat & Chat' - a 12 week programme of cricket and psychoeducation run in partnership with Rolleston Cricket Club.

Some of TMUK's Trustees were lucky to join a recent session where they had the opportunity to master the game of cricket and put their skills to the test.  A huge thank you to Burton & District Mind for the opportunity to meet some amazing people whilst having lots of fun!

Keri Lawrence, Development & Sustainability Officer,Burton & District Mind said "It's still there isn't it? The odd ideas some people still have about mental health problems - perhaps the myth is that recovery is all about medication or must come from the NHS. Our reality is people with mental health problems are still capable and active and can have fun - they just need a helping hand. Burton and District Mind and the Toyota Manufacturing UK Charitable Trust, together with our cricketing friends, have come together to deliver something very special right in the heart of Burton-on-Trent. We have put together a project that combines sports and wellbeing activities, both of which contribute to improved wellbeing, a sense of belonging and builds self-esteem.  We are grateful to the Toyota team for actively supporting our wonderfully received project. We all deserve good mental health, and together we'll get everyone there".

Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY)

In Dec 2011, aged 19, Sam Wright collapsed outside his home after a run & passed away.  He was studying at Derby University to be a teacher.  He'd suffered a cardiac arrest due to an undiagnosed heart condition.

Twelve young people die every week of sudden cardiac death.  Since its formation in 1995, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) has been working tirelessly to reduce that number.  As well as promoting and developing heart screening programmes, they support young people diagnosed with potentially life-threatening cardiac conditions, offer bereavement support to affected families and fund specialist referral, screening and cardiac pathology services at leading UK hospitals.

The Friends of Sam Wright Committee was established in 2012 to raise vital funds on behalf of CRY and, since that time, have raised an incredible £90,000 in memory of Sam to finance defibrillators & heart screening events (involving an ECG) for local people.

Earlier this year,  the Trust donated £5,000 to support a local screening session in Derby.

The Charitable Trust has supported this amazing charity since 2013 and will continue to do so in the future.

British Liver Trust

The British Liver Trust are the UK’s leading liver health charity who work to improve liver health for all and support those affected by liver disease or cancer.  The liver performs hundreds of essential tasks so it’s important we look after it!

Earlier this year, the Trust donated £3,000 to support the Love Your Liver Campaign in Wrexham.  The Roadshow, which took place in May, seeks to raise awareness about liver health locally and find people with early signs of liver damage, so they can get the care and support they need.

The Roadshow proved a huge success with an excellent turnout.  The charity had hoped for 100 visitors and were thrilled when 155 members of the public took the opportunity to receive a free liver scan and complete their liver health screener.  This resulted in GP referral letters being provided to 13 people so they could seek further support and act early.

A job well done!  We are proud to help keep you on the road and support this vital work.

MHA Communities Cheshire West

At MHA Communities Cheshire West, they want to enable older people to maintain their independence and live later life well. Befriending, shopping, medication collection, wellbeing activities, lunch clubs & exercise classes take place at both their Ellesmere Port Dementia Hub and their Dementia Community Support Project in Neston.

A donation earlier this year supported several day trips, giving those living with dementia and their carers an opportunity to 'escape their prison of four walls', a comment they often hear.

A day at Wirral beach blew away the cobwebs whilst a mosaic of freshwater wetland habitats and woodland bursting with wildlife was the experience at Burton Mere Wetlands.Other trips to the museum and on the River Mersey offered something to look forward to, conversations and banter to be had, ideas to exchange and great meals to be enjoyed.

Me&Dee Boys and Girls Club

At Derby Theatre, community and collaboration are at the heart of what they do, creating experiences that uplift hearts, broaden horizons and build change for the better.

Funding from the Trust earlier this year supported them in their mission to host a monthly Dementia Friendly Carers Café, welcoming people living with Dementia and their carers to socialise and take part in creative activities. The café is led by an experienced creative practitioner and supported by Derby Theatre's Community projects.

In addition, a Dementia friendly tea dance enabled participants to enjoy an afternoon of music, dance & refreshments whilst a singer and musician toured care homes in Derby, maximising the positive impact of live music and interactive sessions.

Rainbows Hospice for Children & Young People

Rainbows cares for hundreds of families every year who have a baby, child or young person with a serious or terminal illness that means that their lives will be shorter than most.

Staff uniforms cost the charity approximately £3,000 each year and are one of the many costs the charity needs to secure as they are incredibly important, not least because they protect against cross contamination.

Our 2024 fundraising activities contributed towards these much-needed costs, ensuring the charity continue to brighten short lives across the East Midlands.

Look Good Feel Better

Look Good Feel Better is dedicated to improving the quality of life and self-esteem of people undergoing cancer treatment. The programme offers complimentary group and individual sessions that teach beauty techniques to help people with cancer to face their diagnosis with greater confidence.

Despite Covid restrictions, their vital work continued through a range of virtual workshops when the online experience offered live instruction and tips for dealing with appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. Advice on skincare and makeup, haircare, nail care, women’s body confidence and gentle chair-based exercises, including pilates, tai chi, yoga, meditation and breath work were available.

Fast forward and today their face-to-face workshops have returned.  LGFB Volunteer, Lu Wright commented: “It’s great to be back, the ladies love every minute, they chat, laugh, make new friends and feel safe, feeling proud at Royal Derby Hospital”.

Following a donation of £2,000 from the Trust earlier this year, funding will support much needed workshops at the Royal Derby Hospital.

Carry on the fantastic work!
